Queen & Slim

Queen & Slim, 8.2/10, “The black Bonnie and Clyde!”. Tonally poetic, Melina Matsoukas has created a romance story that captures the resilience and desperation of a young couple whose Tinder date soon escalates into a state wide manhunt after a police officer is shot.

I have seen a lot of mixed opinions around this film so to add a spanner into the works, I loved this movie. Finding it so profoundly moving, for a while after I felt emotionally scared. Aesthetically, this film is beautiful with every frame perfectly composed. The soundtrack is phenomenal and the script is well written including romantic dialogue exchanges that challenges literary classic.

Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith have offered up a performance that is honest, endearing and exhibits the depth they can pull from. This is a film that may be a bit ‘Marmite’ however it’s clear which camp I’m in. Although it may owe a lot to previous rifs, you are pulled into the world that surrounds the central characters and with that, you are instantly pulled into the drama. Go watch Queen & Slim to be utterly captivated in their journey.
