The Good Liar

The Good Liar, 5.8/10, offers a cat-and-mouse thriller to entertain its audiences. Or it was at least trying to. Initially I found the slow-burning narrative to be quite tantalising. Having clues slowly revealed throughout the runtime kept the audience guessing what could possibly come next. However with next to no warning we were transported to a completely different movie in the closing 15 minutes. It is a huge ask for an audience to accept an unprecedented twist of everything we have known about the protagonist. Conceptually this had an opportunity to be great however the execution certainly doesn’t capitalise on that potential. Mirren and McKellen both deliver gripping performances but that still wasn’t enough to make up for the narrative shortcomings. This may be the film for you, but personally I left feeling a little disappointed.
