Joker, 9.1/10, is one of the most realistic approaches to capture a gritty character study of one of the most infamous comic book villains. Athur Fleck has been disregarded and kicked to the curb by society. However, when you stretch an elastic band far enough, that built up tension will make it snap. Arthur quickly descends into madness and becomes the timeless character that is the Joker.

Now, this is no easy role to take on, after Heath Ledger’s phenomenal performance in The Dark Knight, 2008, and no one has really been able to follow. However, despite the colossal challenge, Joaquin Phoenix has risen to the mark and surpassed all barriers. The intricacies within his performance have been executed sublimely. His physical movements, his self loathing rage, all create a Joker you never thought you needed. This is a chilling masterpiece that has been scored wonderfully, shot incredibly to emphasise his melancholic isolation and has a narrative that you are unable to avert your eyes from the morbid curiosity.

This film does have a dark, uneasy centre but that is because it is a film that is an origin story about a character that is mentally unstable and that is an understatement: he is a villain. It wasn’t as violent as I thought it would be and I think that is what I found more uneasy. It’s the moments he’s not violent or the reasons behind what makes him act violently which I have found most troublesome. This is one of those films that will be the talk of the year and one, you are most definitely not going to want to miss.
