Ma

Ma, 5.5/10, is the latest horror, thriller that has a surprisingly well-known and talented cast. However Blumhouse proceeded with their signature formula of ticking off every horror trope possible, delivering a boring and anticlimactic final product. The only saving grace of the whole thing is Ma herself played unnervingly by Octavia Spencer.

When a group of adolescent friends are looking to buy alcohol they befriend a lonely Carol Ann (played by Octavia Spencer). Carol Ann invites the teens to come and drink at her place in order to avoid the cops. All seems to be going well for the party goes until a string of strange incidents cause them to question Ma’s motivation.

The most disappointing thing about this movie was that it had so much potential, fundamentally it comes down to the fact that far too much was revealed in trailers. The marketing should have been suggestive and tense but without actually revealing what was going on.

I will say it is great to see actors taking chances on the horror genre. I just hope this one doesn’t put them off from any further film choices. Another annoyance for me was how they decided to portray teenagers, the observation was so far removed from the truth that it made the film comical. The line “you don’t vape?!” In particular left me cringing into my seat. Although this review is highly negative the film itself would be worth a watch when it comes to a streaming service.
