Dumbo (2019), 6.3/10, is a young elephant with oversized ears – a characteristic which enables this phenomenal animal to fly. However, when a circus catches onto this miracle, greed will tear Dumbo’s family apart.
Dumbo (2019) is one of many of Disney’s live action remakes which will inevitably mean that some won’t dazzle you like the original and sadly, Dumbo didn’t have what it took to join Disney’s classics. There is a indescribable sense of magic that Disney creates – much similar to how you may feel at the circus – which makes it disappointing to admit that Dumbo doesn’t create that same sparkle. One particular scene that is very much the show stopper is the bubble elephant performance. It was probably the only time I did feel some essence of magic.
The visuals of Dumbo are really well mastered however the novelty of it doesn’t seem to carry the weight of the rest of its faults. It passed the time well enough (although I don’t know if the children in the cinema with me seemed that entertained throughout) but will it stand the test of time? I think not. With the creative scope that Dumbo has, I was surprised how much director Tim Burton chose to stay with in a safe box. Now that may be because of the restrictions enforced by Disney but I feel like they may regret that decision.
