Shazam!

Shazam!, 7.25/10, is an acronym for the powers he possesses: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury. This is a lot for 14-year-old foster child, Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel), to come to get to grips of when he becomes the newest recipient of these powers.

In a vlog style format, we see Billy explore his newly acquired powers with his newly found foster brother, Freddy (played by Jack Dylan Grazer). The two’s child-like approach to something so life-changing is hilarious. After all, what would you expect from a 14 year old boy who transforms to looking like someone a lot older? Of course, their first stop was obviously going to be buying a stash of beer and go into a gentlemen’s club. However, life as a superhero is not as entertaining and carefree as initially thought and the fun and games are cut short when Shazam! (played by Zachary Levi) actually has to start being the hero he was destined to be.

Now, I know you’re probably thinking, do we really need another superhero series when there is one coming out every month at the moment? The answer is probably no. But DC have decided to make one and truth be told, it’s a pretty enjoyable watch. I would describe Shazam! as the PG Deadpool minus the gore and without the inappropriate jokes but all in all, it’s a superhero movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously or requires you to know every minor detail. It knows what it is and it runs with it. At the core, Shazam! explores family values but is coated in a wider plot that is hilarious and thoroughly entertaining. And, although very obvious, I was surprised at the final plot twist which leads to a potential second movie – a film which I now look forward to seeing. Overall, Shazam! is a really fun and lighthearted watch and worthy of the ticket price to see it.
