Creed II, 7.58/10, is probably one of the best sports films I’ve seen. Knees trembling, palms sweating and my heart racing, I was fully invested – poised on the edge of my seat. It was as if I was ring side throughout, even forcing me to refrain from breaking the cinema code of conduct by shouting at the screen.
I would like to act like I completely knew the history of this franchise but it’s always been one that I gained little interest for. However, Creed II needed no pre-knowledge or context as everything was thoroughly explained for any first time watchers. With that in mind, Creed (played by Micheal B Jordan) and Drago (played by Florian Munteanu) both gave a performance that was as hard-hitting in the ring as it was out. Under a layer of cheese, there is a crisis of masculinity which both fighters are facing, an aspect I found surprising for a film of this nature. Creed II is more than a film about boxing: it’s a tale of loss, family, passion and legacy. I will admit my fists went up when the famous theme song made a pleasant and momentous comeback. It goes without saying that this has to be seen on the big screen. Make sure you see one of the biggest boxing events of the year.
